After my degree in Psychology and Philosophy I trained as a clinical psychologist. I worked in the NHS for 14 years, specialising in how people adjust to the life-changing event of a spinal cord injury. During this time I became interested in how mindfulness meditation can help people find acceptance, resolve emotional problems and manage chronic pain. As I learned more about mindfulness I realised also what it could do for me as a mother of young children.
I gained a lot of support from other mothers and voluntary organisations for new parents when my daughter was born in 2004. This inspired me to give something back to help other new parents, and a few years later I started volunteering as a breastfeeding counsellor with La Leche League and set up Oxford Sling Library with some friends.
I soon realised that I loved working with pregnant couples, parents and babies. I was looking for a way to combine this passion with a job that would fit around my family’s needs more flexibly. I undertook a diploma in postnatal group facilitation with NCT, and have also trained as a doula, babywearing consultant and baby massage instructor, and studied infant development with the Tavistock. When I came across Mindful Mamma by chance in 2011, everything fell into place and I knew what I wanted to do. More recently I have completed Oxford Mindfulness Centre’s Foundations course in Mindfulness Based Childbirth and Parenting, and am working towards full accreditation as a mindfulness teacher according to the UK guidelines. I am thrilled to have found a way to bring together my interests to focus on the psychological journey new parents make through pregnancy, birth, and the early days, weeks and months with their new baby.
As a clinical psychologist I am registered with the Health & Care Professions Council.
